SUBMISSION DETAILS AND PROCESS
Submissions are now being accepted for potential productions for our 2007 2nd Half Season, which will commence in July 2007.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company produces independent theatre and independent theatre only!

Your production is our production, and will not get lost amongst a mainstage season.

If your production is at Darlinghurst Theatre it is our mainstage production and your production is our priority and focus.

At the heart of Darlinghurst Theatre Company is our very successful collaboration with professional independent artists.

Importantly we are not tied to a resident troupe of artists, nor are we tied to one theatre director's creations.

Productions are created through the partnering of an artist's creative concepts with Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s formidable resources.

Submissions - Next Round

New Australian or new international work is encouraged, particularly new work to Sydney. The emphasis is on creating a theatrically diverse and appealing program. Classics and modern classics are not excluded, though new work to Sydney is a priority when we select the program.

We are interested in various types of work, narrative based, non-narrative and the variations in between. We are looking to expose our audience to a diverse range of work.

While we have had many sell-out shows in past seasons, the commercial viability of a work is not part of our selection criteria. We will stage shows from the wide range of styles within the independent theatre spectrum.

It is advisable to discuss your choice of production or script with Glenn Terry at Darlinghurst Theatre Company before submitting.

We are currently taking submissions for productions to play July to November, 2007 Season.

Submissions close Friday 9 March 2007 and you will be notified by March 23 if your production has made the shortlist. From here, it will take two more weeks before the final season is announced.

Please submit the following information for major productions:

Ø      A description of the production and reasons for wanting to do it, and director's concept for the production.

Ø      A script with performing rights secured or confirmation that they are available for your use.

If your project is not script based, an outline of the envisaged production and development process  is suitable.

Ø            Director, Cast and Creative list with full CVs. (people currently involved, the director must be confirmed).

Ø            Producer(s): appoint a producer with experience who has a genuine interest in producing.

Ø      Production Crew list, with CVs (people currently involved).

Ø      A Production Budget.

Ø            A Fundraising Strategy: How will you raise your production budget? Include sponsors and funding you have on board and other possible sponsors and support. NB: To ensure maximum financial return for your show, please endeavour, as much as possible not to spend you own funds on production costs.

Please send submissions to:

Darlinghurst Theatre Company
PO Box 387
Kings Cross 2011

(please post, or drop in to the theatre, don't email submissions)

Selection process:

The selection committee is made up of 5 professional artists with literary and professional production experience.

Selection Process:

·        All projects are read by three committee members.

·        A short list of projects is made.

·        From this the program is chosen.

Selection criteria:

·        Artists submitting need to be professional artists and demonstrate professional work practices.

·        Australian content is encouraged, although international work is not discounted.

·        Innovative and original work is encouraged.

·        Submissions need to demonstrate sound production planning.

Partner companies and cooperatives need to be aware of the following:

  • DTC's share (33%) of box office has to reach a minimum of $900/ per week.
  • Darlinghurst Theatre Company is a non profit cultural organisation. Partner companies and co-operatives should be aware that Darlinghurst Theatre Company is subsidising their work. The theatre running costs such as labour, electricity, phones, marketing of the theatre alone are over $7000 a week. A show could sell out every night and Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s 33% of box office would still not meet these expenses.
  • Darlinghurst Theatre Company strongly suggests that partner companies do their best to secure sponsors, grants and other types of financial support. Artists need to see financial return for their work and box office alone will not necessarily cover this.

  • Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s mandate is to support professional independent theatre companies and cooperatives.  This support and subsidy is not available to major theatre companies and organisations that are well financed.
  • For pre paid tickets, Darlinghurst Theatre Company charges $1/ ticket, booking fee to partner companies and cooperatives. (Please note this service is subsidised by Darlinghurst Theatre Company and is substantially less than TicketMaster or Ticketek.)

  • For credit card bookings, Darlinghurst Theatre Company will pay 33% of charges and partner companies pay 67%. This reflects the box office split. Credit card charges are approximately 4.4% of the total purchase.

  • Postage costs: Split as per box office. Darlinghurst Theatre Company pays 33% of postage costs, and the partner company pays 67%.
  • Darlinghurst Theatre Company has a subscription base involving a VIP cards, designed to benefit partner companies and cooperatives. The card offers discounted tickets, however DTC does not take 33% of these sales, only $2 per VIP ticket. From the partner companies point of view, this makes VIP ticket sales identical to selling concession price tickets and provides a subscriber audience for productions.

Venue Hire

DTC's home Darlinghurst Theatre is also available for functions, launches, parties and meetings. The venue has a large foyer, with licensed bar and large balcony, making it a great venue for functions. This type of hire is at a  fixed rate.  (Please phone 93313107 or email glenn@darlinghursttheatre.com for more information).

Darlinghurst Theatre Company is launching a new and very exciting project entitled Critical Stages which is designed to tour outstanding Australian independent theatre, both regionally and nationally.

The aim of Critical Stages is to facilitate greater exposure for some of the best of Australia's independent theatre productions, and assist presenters in accessing these great theatre productions.

A lot of hard work has gone into the development of Critical Stages thus far, and it is already generating a lot of interest within the Australian Arts marketplace.
